Compact vs. Full-Size: Selecting the Perfect JCB Backhoe

JCB 3CX

The JCB Backhoe was introduced 70 years ago, and still it remains at the forefront of JCB’s product line. The 3CX is one of the most popular models of the range, thanks to its fuel efficiency, two-wheel steering manoeuvrability and simple operation.

The renowned 3CX Backhoe Loader is available in two variants – normal and compact. It’s important to choose the right one for your business needs to ensure you’re getting the most out of your digger.

Read on below as we compare the two models.

JCB 3CX

JCB 3CX Backhoe Loader

• Max engine power: 55kW – 81kW
• Operating weight: 7887kg – 9500kg
• Max dig depth: 6.51m

The specs:

• The 3CX ECO comes equipped with a 55kW engine, providing high torque with maximum efficiency, while the PLUS and PRO models are built with 81kW engines, for more power and productivity.
• The 3CX PLUS and PRO boast JCB’s innovative TorqueLock system, a standard feature that optimises performance by delivering fuel savings of up to 25% and trimming road travel time by 10%.
• Auto two wheel drive switches automatically from two wheel drive to four wheel drive when not needed, to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption and tyre wear.

3CX Compact

JCB 3CX Compact Backhoe Loader

• Maximum Dig Depth: 4.33m
• Maximum Engine Power: 55kW

The specs:

• 2m wide and 2.74m high – 50cm narrower and 25% lower than a standard 3CX Backhoe Loader.
• 6m turning circle and 2m width means the machine can work in a single lane carriageway, so a road can be kept open.

Benefits of using a standard size 3CX over a compact 3CX

• Greater Digging Power and Reach: The standard 3CX boasts a larger engine and overall size, translating to more muscle for tougher digging jobs and a longer digging reach for deeper trenches.

• Increased Lifting Capacity: The larger size of the 3CX translates to a higher lifting capacity, allowing you to handle heavier loads and materials.

• Enhanced Stability: The increased weight and footprint of the standard 3CX provide greater stability, especially when lifting heavy objects or working on uneven terrain.

• Potentially Lower Operating Costs: While the initial purchase price might be higher, the standard 3CX’s larger engine might offer better fuel efficiency when performing heavy-duty tasks compared to the Compact’s engine working at full capacity.

Benefits of using a compact 3CX over a standard size 3CX

• Superior Manoeuvrability: The Compact 3CX shines in tight spaces as it 35% smaller than its standard size counterpart and tighter turning circle. This allows for easier navigation in congested areas and around obstacles.

• Reduced Damage Risk: Due to its smaller stature, the Compact 3CX minimises the risk of damaging surrounding structures or fixtures while working in confined environments.

• Lower Initial Cost: The Compact 3CX typically has a lower purchase price compared to the standard 3CX.

• Suitable for Lighter Applications: For tasks that don’t require heavy-duty digging or lifting, the Compact 3CX can handle the job efficiently while potentially offering better fuel economy.

It’s vital to smooth business operations to be using the right equipment onsite. Take into consideration what kinds of tasks you will need your backhoe to do, as well as the area you will be working in. It’s important to note that both machines can be easily transported with no special permits required. Once you have thought about those factors, you should be ready to make an informed decision on your perfect backhoe loader. If you’re still unsure, please contact our dedicated sales team.
